Shangri-La doesn’t exist as a real place and is instead a fictional setting supposedly based on the western edge of the Kunlun Mountains which winds its way through Asia taking in regions like Tibet, China and Tajikistan. It was created by the author James Hilton for his 1933 novel Lost Horizon which sees some British hostages finding sanctuary in a Garden of Eden-style monastery.
