How Do Online Slots Work?

Have you ever wondered how slot machines are programmed? Fear not! Malcolm and lucky are here to give you the lowdown on just how a slot game ticks.

It’s that time again, the Kerching blog is back! But there are no game reviews today. Instead, Malcolm and lucky are answering the big question; how do online slots work? Our lovable duo doesn't know much outside of the online slots world, so they’re the perfect guys to teach you everything you need to know. Enough preamble though, let’s get stuck in!

How are Slot Machines Programmed

M: Lucky, mate.

L: Alright lad, what’s cracking?

M: Well my canine companion, I’ve got a little task for us.

L: Sounds intriguing, what is it?

M: It’s a new blog post for Kerching, but this time though we’re going right back to the basics. We’re going to do a little educational post for new playerss out there.

L: Sound…. I like sharing my wisdom. Let’s do this.

M: Brill! I thought we’d have a little look at just what makes an online slot tick.

L: Good stuff, shall we get started?

M: I reckon we should mate.

How to Work an Online Slot

M: Now this really is the absolute basics, but it’s a vital part of online slots that quite a few players don’t know about.

L: This has to do with how they’re programmed.

M: Aye mate, it’s called a random number generator, or RNG for short. RNGs are used to decide whether or not a payout will be granted. They are designed to make every spin both fair and completely independent of any previous ones.

L: And you know exactly how they do that, don’t you?

M: It's a little complicated so bear with me. Basically, the generator makes random sequences of symbols regularly, ensuring that there is no possibility of the spin being fixed. This means that each time you go on one, it is entirely fair as no spin has any correlation to another. There aren't any patterns to the payouts, which is a good thing.

L: Correct. And it’s in the players best interests, innit?

M: Yes, because it means that each spin has the exact same chance of landing a win as any other. So, if you've just had a winning spin, then you don't have to worry about a cooling down period or anything like that. Each turn has to be entirely independent to the spin before it.

L: It’s a bit like a raffle. A load of numbers gets spun about and then picked randomly.

M: Exactly that mate, so it’s actually pretty simple.

Where do Online Slots Come From?

L: Ok, now you know how it works, but we get asked a lot about who actually makes the slots. Its defo not us.

M: No of course not Lucky, we might be robots, but we're not that clever! The slots actually come from game developers like IGT or NetEnt. They are responsible for some of the best slots in existence like Cleopatra and Gonzo’s Quest. Whether it’s graphics or gameplay, whatever makes you love a slot, these guys are the ones responsible.

L: And with all the games out there, our players often wonder how we select which ones gets to be the ‘lucky’ ones that are showcased on the site. Do you see what I did there?

M: Yes, I caught your shameless self-promotion. Anyway, Kerching is an online casino. This means we can host the games on our site and make sure they are both verified and function properly. You should always use a reliable site like Kerching as you can be sure that it is trustworthy and won’t try any funny business.

L: Plus, you get to spend some time with us!

M: Too right, what more could you ask for?

How to Win in an Online Slot

L: This is what we’re all really dying to know Malc.

M: It's a bit of a tricky to answer mate. There isn't a method you can use to win an online slot. As we've already mentioned, all the spins you have in a game are entirely randomised. This doesn't mean there aren't ways to help increase your chances of landing a win, but there is no way of changing the way in which the spins are generated.

L: Some people think there are ways to boost their chances of winning, but it doesn’t work like that guys.

M: The first thing you have to be aware of is a game’s RTP percentage. This is what the game should give back to you in terms of winnings. Slots have various RTPs, but they normally sit at around 95%. Some can reach even higher than that though, and these are the ones you might like to look out as they theoretically should return more. However, it is important to stress that the number is only a hypothetical as the spins are randomised. There's no guarantee that you will actually receive this percentage in winnings.

L: Nice one Malc, any other tips for the budding player?

M: You bet Lucky. One of the biggest attractions of a slot is its bonus features. This is essentially what separates games from one another. Themes and visuals are beautiful, but they have no effect on the slot's actual gameplay. This is where bonuses come in. Things like free spins, multipliers or additional wilds can have a massive impact on your payout if you’re fortunate.

L: Are there any features which are better than others?

M: Each slot offers a different mix of these features, and it's up to you to decide which ones you like and which ones you don't. For example, if you just want to land as many payouts as possible, then pick a game with a generous free spins feature. But if you’re looking for those big wins or even a jackpot, then adding more wilds or high-value symbols to the reels is a good idea. It all depends on how you want to win the game.

L: Lovely stuff. We’ve got RTP and bonus features, any last tidbits for our adoring fans?

M: Aye, one last thing Lucky. At Kerching, we regularly have promotions and offers on, including a welcome offer for new members. Now, this doesn’t increase your chances while you’re playing, but it does give you more spins to play about with, which potentially means more wins.

L: Wonderful, does that about finish us off Malc?

M: It does lad, but before we go, I thought I’d recommend a couple of slot games to get our readers stared.

L: Sound lad, what titles make the cut then.

M: I’ve gone for the two biggest slots out there; Rainbow Riches and Cleopatra. The former is an entertaining Irish-themed slot with a wealth of bonus features for you to try out. What’s more, there is actually more than one Rainbow Riches out there, and the series features a mix of free spins, multipliers and much more. Cleopatra is an iconic name in the world of online slots, and it's not hard to see why. It combines a slick and smooth user interface with a very generous free spins mode. If you want to play either of these games, then stick with Kerching as we have them both, plus loads more for you to try.

L: They are good games to be fair. I reckon we should mention our promos as well though Malc.

M: Great idea Lucky! As we’ve already mentioned, if you’re new to Kerching you can take advantage of our particular sign up an offer on our promotions page as well as any other offers we currently have on.

L: Sweet, now that we’ve talked about them for so long, I might actually go play some!
