Scarily Good Halloween Slots
Autumn is here, and with it comes darker nights and a fair few frights. That’s right, it’s the month of Halloween, and that means Kerching have had a little look in our library for the most macabre, unnerving and downright terrifying slots we could find. The result is listed below, but be warned, this blog may contain pirates, voodoo spirits and all manner of ghastly monsters. It’s Kerching’s scarily good Halloween slots.
The Games
Baron Samedi
You know we had to start with the spookiest game in our entire library, one that revolves around sorcery and the underworld. This title from Yggdrasil Gaming is all about its namesake, the loa spirit known as Baron Samedi. A huge figure in Haitian culture, he was charged with guiding lost souls to the underworld, as well as other supernatural things like resurrection. It’s not just magic he’s known for either, as Baron Samedi has a storied history of mischief, mayhem and debauchery. This theme is translated very well, with a complex bonus that plays into it perfectly, plus several graphical references.
When it comes to Yggdrasil slots, they typically feature the most polished displays in all of online gaming. The developer knows how to make a visually appealing interface, but also excels at making it thematically relevant. It’s no different in this game, as every inch of the screen is used to add to the world-building. The reels themselves are styled like a workbench for the Baron’s activities, with various objects that wouldn’t look amiss in a horror film. There are tarot cards piled high, animal skulls and bones plus a smoking cigar end, and there is a suspenseful drum beat that rings in the background. It’s a truly frightening scene.
Do you know what isn't scary, though? The bonus features! The main one is the Tarot Cart bonus, which is an intricate system that can add real variety to your gameplay. As you play the game, the dealer will give you cards when you meet certain criteria, such as triggering a re-spin. Each of these will have a number attached that represents the number of cards you will have to collect to trigger its bonus. Once you've collected everything you need for one of the cards, you will get three free spins with that specific modifier applied. The cards are split into four groups, represented by Green, Purple, Red and a Mystery category. They can offer a mix of multipliers, guaranteed wins, stacked symbols and much more. The free spins round and re-spin feature are just the icings on the cake.
Pirates Plenty The Sunken Treasure
Halloween isn’t just about ghouls, ghosts and other ghastly monsters, there are plenty of things in real life just as scary. Pirates are one such example, with many Halloween revellers sporting eye patches, hooks and tricornes every year. Don’t be fooled by Hollywood though, the swashbuckling heroes you’ve seen in the movies never really existed. The reality is that they were cutthroat criminals who ruled the seas with terror and violence, the only authentic part of popular culture is the walking off the plank bit! Well, let’s see how Red Tiger Gaming have done in Pirates Plenty.
The main feature of this slot is the Treasure Reel, which will give you an extra reel to hit those wins. To unlock it, you will have to land the map symbol, which will fill up a meter above the reels. Once triggered, the effect will remain as long as you stay on the same bet level. There is also a free spins mode, which will trigger when you land the scatter symbol at least three times in a single spin. Ten free spins will be awarded to you and a new symbol, the Ghost Captain, is added into play. Every time it lands, a lock on the chest above the reels will open and when you hit three, you will receive extra spins with one of the low-value symbols serving as a wild.
There are also two special symbols in the game that can bestow benefits to you. The first of these is the Monkey Wild, which will initiate a re-spin with all the low-value symbols removed if you land it in a winning combination. The second is the wild ship which can stack the reels with wilds and possibly provide a multiple of 2x, 3x or 4x, but this bonus can only occur when the Treasure Reel is active.
Trolls Bridge
You may have heard the myths about bridges, trolls and their tolls, but have you ever seen a slot based on one? It’s Yggdrasil again, though this time they’ve swapped New Orleans mysticism for Nordic-inspired monster battles. Like the other title we’ve covered from these developers, the visuals perfectly represent this theme and it’s clear from the off with an animated introduction that sees the trolls draw up the bridge. It’s all stylised with a cartoonish aesthetic rendered in an explosion of colour. It’s a wonderful display and a little brighter than the other entries on this list.
The main feature in this game is a free spins round which can offer a variety of effects that will apply to the spin. To trigger it, you will have to land the scatter symbol at least three times on the reels and the number of modifiers you get will depend on how many you get. The best you can hope for is ten free spins with five of the feature picks, but even if you get the lowest, you’ll still receive a tasty six free spins and three feature picks. The bonuses you can get include extra spins, added wilds, sticky symbols and stacked reels. If you have activated the Golden Bet option, which costs an extra five coins per spin, you will get an extra feature pick.
Landing the Bonus Pot is another way to get access to the spins, as doing so can award any of the three tiers of spins and features picks. Alternatively, you may receive a coin prize of between 40 to 1,000 coins. Finally, there are two randomly triggering bonuses, one which will trigger on a winning spin, and another that will trigger on a losing attempt. The former will multiply the amount you’ve won by 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x, while the latter will grant a prize of 100 to 1000 coins.
Holy Diver Megaways
For the final slot, we’re looking at an unholy mix of death metal and medieval mythology with Holy Diver. Based on the song of the same name, with a few references to the dark ages thrown in to boot, it may sound a little strange, but this Big Time Gaming effort has made waves with its gameplay and graphics. It’s positively packed with bonuses and this variety has proved a real hit with fans
Now as part of the Megaways system, you will get a different number of symbols and paylines on each spin, ensuring the game feels fresh throughout your gameplay. You could hit a maximum of 117,649 ways to win in the base game, so this can be a generous bonus if you’re lucky. On top of that though, Holy Diver is a feature-filled slot, boasting numerous benefits that could give your payout a boost. The first is the reel adventure, which plays out like a trail mini-game, as a knight will march between the reels. Occasionally, he may come across a chest, which will reveal things like stacked wilds, removing the low-value symbols from play or multipliers. It can also offer a variety of gems and, if you collect one of each colour, this will trigger the Shield of Fortune bonus.
This will present you with two options; enhance the reels by one level, which will add a 2x wild multiplier, or enter the free spins round. If you choose the latter option, you will receive ten free spins, with gems serving as wilds if they land. Additionally, the knight will battle against monsters in this round, dispensing the gems if he defeats them. Five will initiate a re-spin and each time this happens, the Megaways will increase, even if you’re already at the maximum. You could reach 586,000 paylines in total, which is just about the most we’ve ever seen.
