Wednesday, 13 February, 2019
Bright colours, brilliant food and bombastic fireworks, it can only mean one thing; it’s Chinese New Year! This time around it’s the Year of the Pig and what better way to celebrate than with a Kerching blog covering all the best Chinese-themed games. If you’re new to the world of UK online slots, you might be surprised to learn that there’s actually a pretty big market for games with this theme. So Malcolm and Lucky have been scouring the Kerching library to find the best ones, so you don’t have to. With that said, here is Malcolm and Lucky’s guide to Chinese New Year slots.
Malcolm and Lucky’s Guide to Chinese New Year Slots
M: Happy New Year!
L: You what mate? I swear that was a month ago. My circuits must be on the fritz.
M: No Lucky, you’re alright, it’s Chinese New Year, and I thought we’d mark it with a little blog.
L: Oh very interesting, it’s not the Year of the Dog by any chance?
M: No, you’ll have a to wait a while for your time to come around. It’s actually the year of the Pig in 2019.
L: Alright then, can’t say I’m not disappointed though.
M: Come on now, maybe a look at some stellar slots will perk you up.
L: You know what Malc, I reckon it might.
Gong Xi Fa Cai
L: I’ve not played this one before Malc. In fact, I don’t even know what it means!
M: Well Lucky, it’s actually the perfect one to start with as it literally translates to ‘Happy New Year.’
L: You’re off to a fine start then. Tell me a little more about it.
M: Okay, first of all, the visual design is about what you’d expect considering the Asian theme. Gold and red dominate the colour pallet and the symbols are inspired by the various animals of the new year. Whilst the pig isn’t represented, the high-value symbols are comprised of a dragon, an eagle, a tiger and a small group of Koi Carp. Apart from this, there are a lot of other visual nods to the theme, like the traditionally dressed character who resides in the corner of the screen with a pile of gold. Overall the graphics are very pretty indeed.
L: I know you’re into fashion, but you know what sets my circuit board off…. what about the features? They’re the main thing after all.
M: I don’t think you’ll be disappointed Lucky as there are a fair few to get through like the free spins mode that can be unlocked by landing three of the scatter symbols anywhere on reels one, three and five. You will be awarded eight free spins initially, though more can be won by re-triggering the bonus. The next is a multiplier bonus which will grant a 2x, 3x or 5x effect on any winning combination you land on reel one with one of the multiplier symbols in it. After that, we have the Dynamic Symbol Replacement bonus which can randomly change symbols on reels two, three and four into one of the high-value ones. Finally, there is a progressive jackpot that can be won after any base game win with the multiplier feature. You will be taken to a minigame where you must choose from a number of red envelopes. Find three matching gems, and you will win one of four jackpots, either the Maxi, Major, Minor and Mini.
L: Bleeding heck mate, you weren’t kidding about the number of bonuses. They certainly didn’t skimp out.
M: Too right, mate. If you think that’s good, wait till you see what else we’ve got in store.
L: You’re going to have to take the lead again mate, I might have heard of Peking Duck, but this is completely new to me.
M: You’ll be glad I’ve introduced you to it afterwards. Peking Luck is based around the old capital of China before it changed its name to Beijing. There’s a clear thematic design to the game that compliments its graphics wonderfully. The background Is packed with lush blossom trees, vast oceans and a sea of bright lanterns. The symbols are similarly fitting, with the high-value ones including some cymbals, a fan, a drum and a dragon.
L: It definitely looks good, but what I want to know is where all my wins are going to come from.
M: Unlike our last game, Peking Luck doesn’t offer a lot of bonus features. Instead, the gameplay is centred on the game’s free spins mode and the multipliers found in the game’s special symbols. Let's cover the free spins first. To trigger this feature, you’ll have to land the Golden Gong Scatter symbol 3, 4 or 5 times anywhere on the same spin you’ll be granted a multiplier of 2, 10 or 250 times your bet respectively and activate the Free Spins Bonus. You’ll then be taken to a mini-game where six fans are shown on screen. You’ll have to pick one of these to reveal the number of free spins that’ll be awarded. This number can be anything from 8 to 38.
L: Very useful that is.
M: Hold on Lucky, I’m not finished yet. There’s another bonus that applies here, another minigame this time offering you a selection of 6 dragons. Picking one will reveal a multiplier between 2x and 18x, which will then be applied to all the free spin. What’s more, you can win an additional 10 free spins each time you land 3 or more scatter symbols. You can re-trigger this an unlimited number of times meaning there’s massive potential for some big wins.
L: Colour me, impressed mate, that’s a hefty bonus indeed! I believe you mentioned something about the special symbols earlier though?
M: Aye I did. We’ve already covered the multiplier you can receive from the scatter, but the wild symbol can give you even bigger ones. It is represented by a woman holding a fan and landing 3, 4 or 5 of these on a payline will grant you multipliers of 10x, 160x or even 400x your total stake respectively. This is a nice little bonus on top of the wilds base effects and could net you a tasty sum.
L: As much as I love the duck, I think I’ve just found my new favourite Peking!
M: Considering your aversion to felines, I reckon you won’t like the next anywhere near as much.
L: Malc, if there is one thing I hate more than cats, it’s big cats.
M: Calm down Lucky, the Lion Dance is an old Chinese tradition that takes place during special occasions, such as the Chinese New Year. The in-game visuals and symbols are suitably fitting, with bright, bold colours dominating the reels. The background is stunningly detailed, a delicate string arrangement serves as the games backing track and there’s even a fully rendered 3D dragon that will occasionally show up on the reels.
L: I have to say Malc, every one of the slots we’ve covered so far has looked amazing. As always though, there’s only one thing I really care about.
M: The bonuses I know. I think you’ll be pretty pleased as there’s a few to get through. First off let’s talk about the game’s reel modifiers. I’ve already mentioned the animated dragon that occasionally flies past the reels, but I haven’t told you that there’s a reason he does. The dragon can randomly trigger one of four effects, which include stacks of high-value symbols, giant symbols and wilds, spreading symbols and coin prizes.
L: I always like a little extra oomph on my reels, any more for any more?
M: Aye mate, there are two other bonuses; a free spin round and a progressive jackpot. To trigger the free spins mode, you will have to land three of the scatter symbols on reels one, three and five. You’ll then be given three ceremonial objects to choose from. Depending on which you pick, you will be awarded up to 18 free spins, and one of the reel modifiers will be applied as well to give you a little boost. For the progressive jackpot, you need to land three of the jackpot symbols. You will then be awarded the Mega, Super or Quick Hit jackpot and there is also a daily prize that must be paid out before the required time.
L: I tell you what Malc, it’s another seal of approval from me.
M: Lion Dance has a lot of potential. Back to the list now and it looks like we’ve only got one left!
L: Let’s hope it’s a good one, we need to go out on a bang!
The Legend Of Shangri-La: Cluster Pays
M: This game might not focus on Chinese New Year, but it shares thematic qualities with the others we’ve discussed. It’s also pretty popular too and thus earns itself a place on this list. It’s set in the mythical land of Shangri-La and has a beautiful visual design, with the background encompassing a richly detailed landscape of tranquil streams and arching blossom trees.
L: Another great looking slot, hit me with them bonuses, Malcolm.
M: Woah now Lucky, I’ve got something pretty important to say about the layout of the game first.
L: By all means, fire away.
M: So, rather than the usual set up of left-to-right paylines, you’ll have to land groups of at least nine matching symbols horizontally and vertically. The game features three symbols, shown as variations of the guru character by the side of the reels, that stand two-reel positions tall. This will help in getting the nine symbols you need for winning combinations.
L: I’m glad you told me that otherwise I would have been completely lost! With that said, now can we have a look at the bonuses?
M: yes lad, though you’ll have to give me a minute as there are a fair few of them. To start we have a free spins mode which is triggered by landing three, four, five or six of the scatter symbols anywhere in view for which you will receive 5, 6, 7 or 8 free spins respectively. After each of these two to six wilds will be added to the reels, the first two of which are random while any after will place next to a cluster. What’s more, if your total winnings after this round are less than 10x your bet, you will be awarded an extra spin. Next up, landing two or more clusters of at least four matching symbols will cause wild symbols to appear on the reels until those clusters form a winning combination.
L: This is a cracking start mate, keep them coming.
M: There are only two more mate; Sticky Respins and Nudge Reel. The first of these is triggered by landing two matching clusters of between five and eight symbols. This will grant a free spin with the clusters involved stuck in place. Any additional matching symbols you land will award an extra spin when there is none the final payout will be calculated and awarded to you. The latter is activated when two of the game’s scatter symbols land on the reels and another land outside of view. This outside symbol may then be ‘nudged’ into the reels to trigger the free spins mode.
L: Blimey, it really is packed with features.
M: Indeed, it is, and with its lovely look and smooth gameplay, The Legend of Shangri-La is definitely a slot to look out for.
L: And look out for it I will. Have we got the end then?
M: We certainly have, pal. The only thing left to say is that you can play The Legend of Shangri-La, Peking Luck, Gong Xi Fa Cai and Lion Dance all at Kerching. If you’re a new user, don’t forget to check our promotion page for our welcome offer plus any other specials we may have ongoing.
