Casino lovers excited as 1950s token expected to raise thousands
Online casino players could also be partial to online auctioneering. Both activities have revolutionised their respective industries and now the two are combining at a US auction house. This is because a casino chip from the 1950s is to be sold this weekend, and it's expected to bring in a big price.
The token, which originally represented $5, is from the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas and is only one of four made featuring the Cowgirl logo of a girl leaning on an hourglass - a famous Vegas symbol. It is the latest industry product to go under the hammer with a hefty price tag attached.
According to Tom Slater, director of Americana at Heritage, the auctioneers involved, the lot will go for a big price. He said:
"A rare 1950's era $5 denomination chip from the Sands Hotel and Casino is estimated to sell for $30,000 (£20,000) or more."
Slater added that there is another $5 chip going under the hammer, this time from 1946. The token comes from the opening of Bugsy Siegel's Flamingo Hotel and is estimated to bring in more than $4,000.
Big casino betting lots
Casino valuables are bringing in big money at auctions across the world. Earlier this year, Peter Sidlow and Pat MacGuire's Victorian Casino Antique Auction put exclusive items like the Five Cent Watling Rol-A-Top Bird of Paradise Slot Machine under the hammer. Although the machine works, it's certainly a far cry from the online slots our punters now enjoy!
