Other countries paying big for illicit casino use
Unregulated online casino use in Australia will cost players $1 billion over the course of this year, according to a recent estimate.
Statistics from Global Betting and Gaming Consultants show Australian gamblers will spend $968 billion (£578m) on online casino games such as online roulette before the end of 2010.
The status of online gambling in the country is currently under consideration, although senator Nick Xenophon would not like to see it legalised. He believes a measure banning Australian credit card companies from processing payments to offshore gambling websites would be more effective.
However, Betfair CEO Andrew Twaits has remarked that making the websites legal in Australia could help owners keep track of any potential gambling problem and therefore be a good thing.
Another proponent for legalising the activity is gaming industry lawyer Jamie Nettleton. He told Fairfax Media that tax revenue would be brought onshore by the move. He claimed new regulation is "inevitable because it's generally recognised that any form of prohibition is not going to work".
