Elvis has his name given to Budapest Park in his honour
Budapest's city council has approved a plan to name a small park after Elvis Presley in commemoration of The King's support for Hungary's anti-Soviet revolution of 1956.
Last month he was posthumously named an honorary citizen and it was announced a landmark in the Hungarian capital would be forthcoming.
Elvis slots into Hungarian history as someone who was immensely supportive of the Eastern European nation during the anti-Soviet revolution, which occurred in the fall of 1956.
Some 55 years later, Budapest's city council decided to name a small park after The King because of his convictions. Budapest mayor Istvan Tarlos said that a plot near the Margaret Bridge will be called Elvis Presley Park to honour the singer's 'sincere sympathy' toward the short-lived uprising.
This sincere sympathy was evident on January 6, 1957, when Elvis appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show for the last time and sang Peace in the Valley. The famous television host said the gospel tune "reflected the singer's concern for Hungarians' plight after the uprising". Sullivan then told his audience that Elvis Presley - who appears in both Elvis - A Little More Action and Elvis Multi Strike at Kerching - was asking for donations for suffering Hungarians.
Budapest residents picked a green patch of protected land where everyone can enjoy the outdoors while paying homage to Elvis. The patch of solitude will serve this new Hungarian well and may just become another Mecca after Graceland for Elvis fans far and wide to visit, just like they play Elvis online slots at Kerching!
