New Yorker's casino prize goes up in smoke

Blaze sees casino winner's wallet burned - winnings and all

A casino player from New York experienced both ends of the luck spectrum last week. Kenneth Lamoree visited a state casino in Verona and picked up a very handy £2,000.

Mr Lamoree, who has a fiancée and three children, planned to use the cash to pay some bills. However, fate had other ideas, as a house fire saw Lamoree's home go up in smoke - along with the £2,000 winnings he had left in his wallet. Luckily for Lamoree, his fiancée and three children were unharmed by the blaze.

Unlucky for some

Of course, Lamoree's fate is one that can easily be avoided by online casino players. This is because all winnings are automatically transferred to the member's bank account. For example, after a successful run on one of our online slots titles, punters can simply log out safe in the knowledge that nothing can happen to the money they've picked up.

Still, there are some cases of unfortunate casino experiences that border on the ridiculous:

  • Millionaire Henry Kakavas tried to sue a Melbourne casino in 2009, claiming the company took advantage of his gambling addiction. Mr Kakavas lost AUS $35 million (£21.4m) over 18 months, but the court did not sympathise with his plight and he was ordered to pay off his outstanding balance.

  • A slots machine in Alabama last year erroneously told a woman she had won over $40m US (£28m). The lady then tried to claim the amount, and almost did, until the Alabama Supreme Court ruled against the payout.
