Hi-tech chips to make casino play safer

A new breed of casino chip has been designed with an eye on protecting casino players in the US. The hi-tech 'smart' chip uses radio frequency identification technology (RFID) to authenticate its use on tables, and is said to be almost impossible to counterfeit.

Furthermore, the technology can even track how much a player is wagering, meaning that it will 'know' and alert relevant authorities should a player attempt to increase a bet illegally during certain points in a game.

Such problems do not occur with online casino games due to computer technology. However, the introduction of RFID to US casinos will hopefully ensure cheating will become just as rare in offline casinos as it is during games of online blackjack at Kerching.

According to Sean Sullivan, general manager at The Meadows Racetrack and Casino, counterfeiting is a "huge issue" in the casino industry. He told the Philadelphia Inquirer that just one counterfeit chip can shut down a casino, as the establishment will have to go to great expense to replace all of its chips to ensure the foreign token is removed. Sullivan said:

"We don't want to scare anybody to think [counterfeiting] happens every day, but we surely want to do everything we can do to discourage it from happening here. At The Meadows, we're going the full way. We don't want to have any issues with this."

Online casino players looking for a game without risk of fraud can play online roulette, which ensures all bets are taken before the wheel is spun!
