While bricks-and-mortar casinos are still seen as a haven for older gamers, online casinos have reported a rise in the number of young adults playing online games of slots and roulette. In contrast, some real-world casinos are reporting the lowest number of new casino registrations since the early 90s.
Statistics show that adults aged 18-29 are choosing to play games such as slots, blackjack and roulette over the internet, rather than travel to nearby casinos. It seems young adults prefer to log on to online casinos for online slots, roulette and blackjack. But why?
Traditionally, the internet is the domain of the young. Between 2006 and 2008, 83 per cent of the young adult population in Britain regularly accessed the internet.
According to social networking site Facebook, over 2 million UK users of the site are aged between 21 and 39. Facebook itself has over 30 different applications for online slots games. Young people are playing online games in comfortable environments - such as online casinos - possibly because in the real casinos of the outside world, they’re faced with the closed ranks of veteran gamers keen to win big against novice players. Online casinos are far more inclusive.
While young adults aren’t motivated (or maybe confident) enough to travel to their local casino and play slots, roulette or blackjack, the simple process of logging on to an online casino appears to have caught their interest.
Elsewhere, some commentators have suggested the rise of other young gamers - poker or slots players who have gained media coverage for their playing skills - has motivated their peers to play in online casinos.
Recently, 24-year-old poker player Liv Boeree won $30,000 in the European Ladies Championship and her exposure in a number of lifestyle magazines may have served as an inspiration to many young adults heading to online casinos to try to emulate her success.
