The Rise Of Man

- Friday, October 17 2008

A recent survey has found that more than one in ten men in the United Kingdom regularly visit online gaming websites.

The questionnaire, carried out by pollsters YouGov and Ipsos Mori, found that over 11 per cent of British men played online versions of roulette, blackjack and slots, at least once a week.

While punters are traditionally known to gamble their money on major sporting events, such as international football fixtures or high-profile horse races like The Grand National, the survey found that a growing number of men were logging on to online casinos for their entertainment.

Of just over 6,000 adults, the questionnaire found that online casinos, which offered games such as internet blackjack and online slot machines were popular between the 25-34 age range. When asked about their online gaming habits, 14 per cent of adults saying they regularly visited online casinos.

By contrast to the growing number of men visiting online casinos, just six per cent of women regularly gamble over the internet, explaining that online gaming allows them to play blackjack or slots from the comfort of their own home. This raises the suggestion that online casinos are a sort of 'safe haven' for female gamers, who can use the internet to gamble in a safe, comfortable environment.

Worldwide, internet gambling is estimated to be worth just over £5 billion a year, with 22 million regular players logging on to online casinos.
