This week's Kerching blog looks at mascots

The Kerching Casino blog this time looks at the world of mascots - those often-cheeky characters who brighten up brands and products all over the world.

  • Mario - The famous Nintendo mascot actually came to be after games creator Shigeru Miyamoto failed to pick up the rights to use characters from Popeye. He developed Jumpman, who appeared in the original Donkey Kong, but it was in Mario Bros. that the video game icon got his name.

  • Michelin Man - Also known as Bibendum, this character was introduced at the Lyon Exhibition in France in 1894. This makes the Michelin Man one of the world's oldest mascots. He is made from white tyres, something attributed to the fact that tyres used to be much lighter in appearance (this was changed in the early 20th century as carbon was added as a preservative to the rubber).

  • Ronald McDonald - Hailing from McDonaldland, Ronald McDonald first graced McDonald's advertising in 1963. The character was a replacement for Bozo the Clown, a popular television character who advertised the restaurants from 1959 until 1962. He has gone on to feature in his own comics, animated TV show and video game.

  • Mickey Mouse - Mickey Mouse is arguably the most well-known character on this list. He was originally created in 1928 and his first distributed cartoon appearance was in Steamboat Willie. His look has only been slightly altered since this debut, and Mickey is now seen as the lynchpin of the Disney universe.

  • Rainbow Riches Leprechaun - The Rainbow Riches Leprechaun has appeared in numerous Rainbow Riches online slots games over the year. The little scamp has even found his way onto Twitter, where you can follow his exploits daily.

  • Green Giant - The Jolly Green Giant, created by the Minnesota Valley Canning Company, was inspired by a new 'green giant' pea imported from Europe in 1925. The character came to life in 1928 as a fierce giant carrying a very large pea pod. Seven years later the giant became Jolly, and proved so popular the canning firm changed its name to Green Giant Company in 1950.
