IBM computer takes on human champions in game of Jeopardy!

Super-fast machine triumphs over the game show's ultimate contestants.

The long-running, ever-popular game show Jeopardy! pitted man against machine this week. The experiment involved a specially-constructed machine from manufacturer IBM, designed to see if it was possible for a computer to answer questions posed in a 'natural language'. Judging by the result, the answer seems to be a resounding 'yes'.

Over two matches, screened in the US in three episodes, the computer, which consists of two units of five racks and a RAM of 'over 15 TB', beat the two human competitors with a total winnings of $77,147 (£47,923), against $24,000 and $21,600. The first prize of $1 million was donated to charity by IBM, with each human contestant also donating 50 per cent of their winnings to their chosen charities.

The two contestants chosen to take on the super-computer were esteemed former Jeopardy! champions. Brad Rutter holds the title of having won the most amount on Jeopardy!, while Ken Jennings stayed on the show for the longest ever winning streak. They were no match for the project but will perhaps take some comfort in the fact that Watson isn't always right - in a question asking for the name of a US city, Watson answered 'Toronto', which is in Canada.
