He who dares (might) win

- Friday, October 17 2008

We all know that playing at an online casino can be a lot of fun, but you've got to remember to live by your means. Being a gambler can mean that you tread a rocky road in life, whether you're playing on the slot machines, blackjack or roulette tables.

One minute you are living the life of a high roller at the online casino, picking up prizes left, right and centre on the progressive slots.

The next minute you can lose it all, like world-famous poker player John Tabatabai, who had reportedly won and lost over $100,000 at least six times by the time he was 23. Luckily for John, it all worked out in the end. He is now a legend in the business and came second in last year's World Series of Poker Europe, held in London.

Is it fitting that a poker match leading up to this year's World Series is being held on a table suspended 175 feet in the air? Is this some kind of subliminal reminder that all poker players have a potentially long way to fall if the cards do not go their way?

Perhaps that is being too philosophical, but the reality is that all gamblers must be careful that their losses don't weigh them down too much; just ask Lai Yingying from China - whose wife now makes him wear 40 stone boots to stop him from going out to gamble.

Lai told The Sun newspaper: "The shoes take 30 minutes to put on using a special set of bolts and screws. I don't bother going anywhere in the evenings now." Now that he's at home more, maybe Lai's wife should be careful to ensure that he doesn't visit too many online casinos.
